What Is Project-Based Learning?

In a project-based learning environment, instruction is imparted that brings questions, projects and technology together as they relate to the lives of everyday students. Students are able to launch their own investigations allowing them to develop formidable research skills. Through project-based learning, students are actively engaged in solving problems and making the kind of decisions that are required in the real world. Students can choose to, depending on the project, work in groups or by themselves.

Instructors who give facilitation — as opposed to pure direction — assign complex and challenging tasks. The experience that students gain through project-based learning can be applied directly to their lives and real-world situations. Thus, for the student, new learning habits and techniques can be realized and leveraged. Students are encouraged to find original solutions to real-world problems, greatly enhancing their creative thinking skills.
